An Olympic Parcel

Room 4 got a great surprise this morning.
We got a parcel from Jo who is at the Olympics and Paralympics with the Australian team.
Look what was inside.....

Thank you Jo for sending us lego all the way from the Olympics in London.
We hope you will be very pleased to see the boxer we have put aside for you.
We have had lots of ideas of ways we can use our Olympic athletes to help us with our learning.

Blogging Friends

Room 4 is excited because we have found a new blog to be friends with.
E6 is a class of 5 year olds in Lower Hutt.

They had a visit from Captain Cashtastic just like us.
We had a look at their blog and loved all their great posts.
We think E6 has a lot of fun learning together.

The Olympics

Room 4 has loved watching the Olympics.
We have liked watching the swimming, hockey, rowing and equestrian. We love watching the horses jump. We are great at clapping and cheering for the athletes.

Anna's friend Jo is at the Olympics. She sent us a photo of her Olympic Pass. We made our own Olympic Pass. Maybe one day we will really get to go to the Olympics.
We went and showed other classes around the school our Olympic Passes.
Mrs Bobsien tested our barcodes for us. They worked!

You can find out when the New Zealand athletes are competing by clicking on the photo.

The Head's Office

Our blog is featured on another blog called  The Head's Office.
The blog post is about blog dipping which is when you celebrate another blog by featuring it on your own blog.
We think this is a great idea because we love learning from other classes by looking at their blogs.

What blogs do you like?
What have you learnt from other classes?

Kids with a View

On Friday Anna was lucky enough to go and visit Room 3 at Point View School in Auckland.
They are one of our Quad Blogging Buddies.
(Click on the photo to take a look at their blog)

It was great to finally meet Mrs Laburn and Room 3. They showed Anna and Mrs Nagels the great learning they could do with the iPads in their classroom.
Take a look at the photos of some of their learning.

Room 3 was great at sharing. They were also great at helping each other. They could even teach their friends how to try new things. Anna was really impressed how Room 3 worked together.

Thank you for such a super afternoon Mrs Laburn and Room 3.
You are fabulous learners.

Baking

Today we made a feijoa cake. We got the feijoas from the Kitchen Garden at school.

We cut the feijoas in half and scooped out the insides with a teaspoon.

Next we mashed a banana. This bowl has 2 eggs, 1 cup of milk, 1/2 cup of brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda and 1 mashed banana.
This is what it looked like after we mixed it.
Next we mixed it with 2 1/2 cups of flour and 2 teaspoons of baking powder.
Finally we mixed in 1 1/2 cups of feijoas. The mixture smelt delicious.

We poured the mixture into a cake tin. The baking paper stops the cake sticking to the cake tin.

We cooked it in the oven at 180C for about an hour.

The best bit was eating the cake in the sun outside.
Delicious!

Looking after Nature

We went for a walk on our Nature Trail.
When we got through the gate we could hear so many cicadas and we could even see some cicada shells up high on the trees.
When we walked along the path we were surprised to see lots of rubbish on the top part of the track. Anna told us that some of the Nature Trail helpers had collected a whole lot of rubbish just last week.
Look at all the rubbish we saw.

When we walked back to class we picked up more rubbish from all around the school.

We want our Nature Trail area to be full of birds, insects and trees. We want everyone to put their rubbish in the right place.
Take a look at our video to help you remember what to do -

Tutaekuri Potatoes

We harvested some potatoes from our garden. These potatoes are called tutaekuri which means dog poo in maaori. The shape of the potatoes does look a little bit like dog poo.
The tutaekuri were in the dirt. We had to dig with our hands to get them out. We got to hold them in our hands and then put them in the container. Looking for them was like finding treasure. They have dark skin and the inside is purple.
Look at all the potatoes we got.

Do you know how many potatoes there were?
We counted them and there were over 140 tutaekuri potatoes.

What do you think we should do with our potatoes?

Leaves

After our trip to Jubilee Bush we have been talking about all the leaves we saw. We were surprised that leaves could be so different.
We have written this book about leaves.
Leaves

Jubilee Bush

Even though we went to Jubilee Bush over a week ago we talk about it a lot. Today we talked about our trip again and all the things we liked.
What did we like about our trip to Jubilee Bush?

Jubilee Bush

We went on a great trip to Jubilee Bush which is at a park near our school.
We created a flowchart of our trip. We were very excited that we got to go on our school bus.
We had so much fun while we were there and we will share some of our learning with you over the next few weeks.
Here is a photopeach of our trip.

We each created a map showing some of the things we did at Jubilee Bush.
