Tui

We went on a walk around our school and we were very lucky to see a tui up close. It is pretty hard to see the tui in our photos. We couldn't believe it when it flew into the tree above us.

We don't think you'll  be able to to see the tui in this movie but you can hear it sing.
We love listening to the tui.

Tree Planting

Hamilton East School is really good at recycling. We got rewarded for our great recycling by Paper for Trees who gave us 12 trees for our school. Our trees came from Bruntwood Nurseries.
Room 5 helped to plant some of them today.

We planted 2 lemon trees, 2 feijoa trees and 2 lime trees.
When they have grown bigger we will be able to eat the fruit that they grow. We might even be able to do baking with the fruit.

We will have to look after the plants by watering and fertilising them.

Kowhai Trees

We are holding the Kowhai trees because they are ready to plant.

First we dig a hole with the spade.
Then we put our Kowhai tree into the hole gently.

Dugan helped us dig the holes and find a place to plant our trees.
We can't wait to see them grow into big trees.
We hope that the tuis will come and visit them.

Room 5 Seed Shop

Room 5 has a seed shop. You can buy seeds to grow in your garden. We have given every family at our school a notice with the seeds that they can buy from our shop.
We are getting our seeds from Kings Seeds

Look at what the seeds can grow into....
Organic Pea Progress
Sunflower Golden Toasted
Organic Zucchini Black Beauty

We will use the money we fundraise to help our friends at Rafiki Mwema in Kenya and we might even buy things for our school and Kitchen Garden.
If you need a new notice or would like to know more come and see us in Room 5.

Tane Mahuta Day

On Friday we celebrated Tane Mahuta Day at our school. We spent the day enjoy our school environment. We even went down to Putikitiki to look at the trees and to play on the playground.

Kowhai Trees

Something amazing has happened to our kowhai seeds.
They have started to grow.
We had a good look at them and you can see them in this photo.

We went outside and found a big Kowhai tree.
We wonder if our little kowhai seedlings will grow this big.

Sharing our baking

We love to bake in Room 5.
Some of us even help to bake and cook at home too.
Look who made yummy chocolate chip cookies at home!!
It was a new recipe so they had to do a test batch.
They tasted delicious.
I wonder if we can try the recipe?
Sometimes when we cook at home we bring Anna a taste test.
What a lucky teacher!

A school walk

We went on a walk around our school.

We went to the Kitchen Garden and looked at the plants growing. Our broad beans have grown. We also had a taste of the mint leaves. Some of us liked the taste and other people didn't like it.

We went down to Putikitiki and looked at the Nature Trail. We checked on the big tree that had fallen down. Tyson thought the big trees looked like slides.

We loved walked through the long grass. It was squishy and soft.

We checked on the butterfly garden too. We saw a caterpillar on the swan plant. Taine said that the caterpillar needs a jacket because it is cold.

Thank you Analise and Vahoi for helping Anna to take photos today.

Tane Mahuta Day

We celebrated Tane Mahuta Day.
We had a good look at all the beautiful trees at Hamilton East School.

We looked at the leaves.
We looked at the trunk and touched the bark.

We threw the leaves in the air.

The Redwood tree is massive.
We think it is awesome.
Katie says the Redwood tree is taller than her Dad.
We sketched the Redwood tree too.
We even wrote about our favourite trees at Hamilton East School.
